Hi
Was hoping for an ID for this Robber Fly. Quite a large fly about 1 inch in length. Spotted in wooded habitat near ground level.
Thanks,
David.

Thank you Eric. I should have posted in the Asilidae forum. Thanks to whomever moved it for me.

Just an ignorant question for Eric. What separates this genus from Choerades? The absence of the shiny facial hair?

Reinoud,
The main difference to me (following Hull's concepts for Laphriinae) is the lack of the 'Laphria' proboscis -- the long, greatly flattened, parallel-sided 'butter knife' mouthparts of the Laphriini s. str. (characteristic of genera like
Laphria,
Choerades,
Lampria,
Maira, etc.).
Orthogonis has a more cylindrical (in cross section), triangular - tapered proboscis. The males of
O. scapularis have a bright - golden face and mystax

Eric,
Thank you! That is very informative and I should have seen this as Andrenosoma has also a different proboscis.
