The image is also included here for a potential ID it was shot In Doha Saudi Arabia but it would be interesting to hear some thoughts from Hoverfly Fans . The question is watch the Hover Cleaning and grooming about half way through the video watch the small droplet being exudated. Can any one therefore add to what is happening in terms of Hover Biology
Paul has suggested some sort of Oil or Hormone being applied
I have suggested its fairly newly hatched and wonder if it is something to do with gut inflating
It might just be surface water but as Paul points out can be seen being compressed out of the exoskeleton it also occurred to me that alternatively this fluid could be making its way to receptive reproductive organs on the basis of simple detective work where it is coming from and where it is going to !! and is perhaps some sone sort of Pheremone mating Signal
I likely have the species ID wrong as this is a Non UK but would be keen to see some accounts of what people think is happening Possibly Sphaerophora
