Dear visitors,

Yesterday 30.4.07 I saw this quite big ( more than 13 mm)fly sitting on a leaf in the last sunshine in the eastern part of Austria.
But after the first photo shot it disappeared .
It was jetblack and bright red.
I have never seen such a fly before.
Can You please help me to identify.
Thank You

Clitellaria ephippium (Stratiomyidae) female. Larva is found in Lasius fuliginosus nests. I don't know its status in Austria, but it is apparently extinct in Britain - now seen only in the wildest dreams of hallucinating dipterists. :( Wow! Wow! and again Wow!

It was considered extinct in the Netherlands as well, but it has turned up over the past 10-15 years...
