Hello!

I think this 10 mm fly from yesterday at the forest (Ostwestfalen/Germany) is a syrphid of the genus Brachyopa. Can it be determined more closely? Thanks in advance!

Hello Juergen,
Yes, this is definitely a female Brachyopa sp. Unfortunately there are several species with these colors, and I don't think it is possible to identify it from this picture!
We can narrow it down a bit: it seems your animal has longer hairs on the arista, that would give us the choice of scutellaris, plena or pilosa! In scutellaris the humeri (the shoulders) are hardly dusted and brownish in color, so that leaves us with plena and pilosa!
To see which one it could be, we should have a more detailed picture of the third antennal segment, in this picture it is not clear enough!
Greetings

Hello, Gerard!

Many thanks for the confirmation of Brachyopa and your further explanations!

I'm afraid, even in a non-compressed form (below) the picture is not clear enough... :(
