I saw this large fly this morning in Holland, Amstelveen. I see them evry year, mostly during the summer, but April has been exceptionally hot in the Netherlands this year (beating the 300 year record by 2 degrees, quite stunning), with temperatures above 25 Celcis for a number of days.

It is a BIG fly. Before I knew they are less interested in me then I am in them, I was quite scared. Something between 15 and 20 mm, but the heavy built makes them much larges visually.

I saw this guy (is it a he? why?) in a Hawthorn bordering the local footbal field, but it is actually quite close to meadows withs cows (say 500 meter or so).

I arriev at Tabanus, but which one? I add some close up of the eyes, since I understood there are relevant for a proper ID.

Congratulations.
New Dutch record: Male Tabanus autumnalis, very early indeed (never before may 15th).
But then again, with this weather...
