I'm stuck. I can't key this to a family, and I've tried the keys to muscids, sarcophagids, anthomyiids, tachinids and calliphorids without getting anywhere.

Two males caught on the sandy shore of a lowland lake, Hornsea Mere, UK, 17 June 2013.

Large spongy-looking U-shaped pad on sternite five looks diagnostic.

Thanks in anticipation,

Interesting to read about the habitat - the first specimen I ever took was also on a sandy shore, albeit of the rather larger Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. As far as I'm aware the life history is unknown (Mike will correct me if I'm wrong!).
