Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Eristalis arbustorum?

Picture taken in the Stavanger area, Norway, 24th of july 2011. A previous suggestion of ID said Eristalis arbustorum.
I have since then studied pictures of this species but not found one with the characteristic two white stripes between the two white bands
two and three (counting from below). Any suggestions? Is it possible that it is not a hover fly.

Hello Jozza,

The picture does indeed show a Syrphidae and it is a species in the genus Eristalis. The species is however not identify-able because key features are missing in the photo. a lateral or dorsal shot would be needed to correctly identify the specimen shown.
Abdominal markings are not usable to separate species in this genus. However, seeing that you are in Stavanger, Norway; the number of species is limited and E. arbustorum or nemorum would be the most likely candidates.

Greetings,

Ectemnius
