Hi all,
this is my first posting to the group. Most will be for ID as I'm very much a beginner to diptera. So please be patient with me.:)
The attached photo shows a very colourful fly I saw whilst on holiday in Kefalonia [one of the Greek Ionian Islands] in June. I have no idea what it is but one suggestion is a Bee-fly, maybe an Anthrax sp.
Can anyone help me please.
Cheers,
SteveC.

I have seen a picture of a bee fly with similar wing venation that belongs in the genus
Heteralonia, but that one has a yellowish head. So, maybe another species of that genus? It has quite a few species in the Mediterranean.

Thanks Paul, at least I'm in the right area! This was my first holiday in the Med region since becoming more actively interested in diptera - it's a real eye opener to see the huge number of species to be found there. Also quite large populations of each species. The diptera on that one island could probably take a lifetime to sort out...
Cheers,
Steve.
