Flies photographed yesterday resting on an old wicker chair in our garden. Location: 50 km west of Cologne. Could you help me identify the species?

Sorry, it is a bee, not a diptera

Hi Ruud,
it's nice to hear from you, and thank you very much for your helpful comment. So you caught me on the wrong track here.:o I should have noticed, for example, the second wing pair, but the behaviour of this bee was so much like that of a syrphid that I didn't have any doubts and didn't look close enough. Anyway, it explains that I couldn't find the species in any of the keys although I tried hard.
Best wishes,
Hans Theo

As I assume that Paul will move the threat to the
Other insects section: Does anyone know what bee species? Osmia spec.?

Hi Hans Theo,
it's a Megachile sp., female. But I can't tell you which species and I don't know, if ID is possible via pic. If you want, try at http://forum.hymis.de
Best regards,
Marc

Hi Marc,
thank you very much for your help and for narrowing the field. I'll have a closer look at the Megachile section in Bellmann's guide first. Trying the hymis forum is a good idea.
Best regards,
Hans Theo
