Massachusetts, USA May 16, 2013. It perched under a twig and did not permit a dorsal shot.

According to Manual of Nearctic Diptera the only difference between female
Heringia and
Pipiza is some hairs on the katepimeron. I don't see any hairs but I am not entirely sure where the katepimeron is on this fly.

Yes, so true, so in general unidentifiable from a picture. In this case I had the 'Jizz' feeling from my European knowledge! ;-))
