A tachinid fly. When I saw it I thought it was a large Sarcophaga. A little similar to Phorocera assimilis, P. grandis on
http://www.dipter...d_id=54493 But larger and darker. Length 14 mm.
Bergen, The Netherlands. Photos 14-5-2013.

Phorocera assimilis,
indeed one of the few tessellate Tachinidae that is as elongated as a Sarc.

Maybe that's why I've seen it never before in the garden. Thanks Theo.

Well, study it and you will pick it out easily:
* eyes darker red than Sarcophaga
* eyes hairy

Ph. grandis is difficult to tell apart. Needs a pairwise comparison (at least for me).

I know Theo. But when I walk in the garden I take no attention to Sarcophaga. There are so many. On a distance I hadn't recognized it.
I read the differences between these two species Jaakko, but it is difficult to me.
Grandis: fore tarsus as long as 2/3 of the fore tibia....................
Obscura, similis: fore tarsus as long or almost as long as the fore tibia................

Of course you are very right, I cannot tell the difference between assimilis and grandis in this picture.
Assimilis is pretty common and grandis is very rare, so that is why i called it assimilis
