Chaco habitat, 12 km south of Filadelfia, along the Trans-Chaco highway, Paraguay. 29 November 2012.

Length: 10 mm. Tabanidae?

I was going to ask if any Stratiomyiidae had banded eyes but then I came across these two in the gallery:

It doesn't really have the look of Hermetia - better change the title to see if you can attract Martin Hauser :)

This is a female of Chorodonta inermis. Awesome fly!
