Dear dipterists,
during my last visit to Austria in May I took photos of a really beautiful Tabanid fly with amazing eyes. I should like to give it a name, if possible, and will be grateful for any help.

The fly was measured 20 mm long and found here:
Austria, Province of Salzburg, shale alps, at 1100 m. Habitat: montane mixed forest.
Date: May 24, 2012

Dear dipterists,
another attempt... if there is anybody who could give this tabanid fly a genus name (or if possible a species name), this would be phantastic.
Maybe a different, lateral view of the individual may help?

Hello Sabine, your animal is Hybomitra indeed and very interesting specimen! But I dont know which species. Just only as a guess - it is something related to Hybomitra pilosa (or Mouchaemyia sensu Olsufjev,1977). But this is only a guess.

thank you very much, indeed, for having a look and confirming the genus. It was a beautiful animal and extremely cooperative at the foto session.

Sabine, are all tibiae black or the 3rd pair is brownish in basal half? Do you have any picture of palpi?

Dear Libor,
thanks for having a look! Please excuse the late reply, I havn't been online over the weekend.
As you can see from the 3rd picture above leg #1 is completely black, the tibiae of leg 2 and 3 are black with yellowish hairs which do not reach tarsi. While femora of legs 1 and 2 are black, femur of leg 3 is also covered with yellowish hairs.
I can only attach quite a diffuse picture of the palpi, I hope this one show the details that you would like to see.

It is a female Hybomitra aterrima var. auripila.

A typical boreo-mountainous species, usually of coniferous forests.

you are great! Thanks a lot for identifying this pretty fly. Indeed, Picea abies and Abies alba are the dominant conifers up there.
