May 19 2012, New Brunswick. Length 6 mm.
Family ? perhaps even genus?

Do I see a
vena spuria? Could be Syrphidae :)

Thanks guys, of course - how embarrassing! I was fooled by the somewhat heavily marked veins, most of the NA Syrphids have totally hyaline wings.

If you lived in Palearctic not Nearctic, I would say Brachyopa :)

Excellent; thank you. The faunas at the genera levels are similar.
