Even looking at diptera info images I can't see any, but I'm no expert.

There are several differences, but the most obvious one in the pictures above is the dusting on the face.
M. scalare has the face and the frons dusted, wheras the face and frons of M. mellinum are shiny.
An other important difference is the shape of the spots on the abdomen, but those are a bit more variable.
