Hi,
I saw this fly this summer (22/08/2011) in Alps (Chamrousse 1650m, France)
I didn't catch it. Some told me it could be
Empis tesselata, but august seams to be late for this specie, no? And it was smaller thant the one i usually see in april

24/08/2011, Chamrousse (38), 10-12mm

Thank for your answer.
How do you exclude Polyblepharis subgenus? Is there no risk to be something else in the Alps?

This one is quite characteristic in appearance: large, darkish, covered with yellowish grey tomentum in various shades (depending on lighting) brownish yellow wings with distinct yellowish base and (as a rule) dark legs with reddish tibiae. I think the shape and curvature of the abdomen would also rule our many other species.
