Not a clue where this one is concerned - and, given my recent history, I shouldn't be particularly surprised if told it wasn't a Syrphid at all. I would be disappointed, because I thought I was getting good at recognising hoverflies for being that (if nothing more), but not surprised.
Before that pre-amble takes itself any further;
Place: Chongwe District, Lusaka Province, Zambia
Habitat: hedgerow on sandy soil, very keen on wet mud.
Date: 10-09-2011
Size - 10-12mm.

Looks like a male Betasyrphus, maybe something like Betasyrphus luci, but the speciesname is not sure!
