Photo taken in Reading, UK, on 2009-11-05.
I think this is a male
Helina evecta. Am I correct?

It looks just right to me, but
H. annosa is only distinguished from it in the key by the bristles below the hind femur, which we can't see here. A good lateral view might settle it.

Unfortunately this was the only photo I got of this fly. The NBN Gateway data (
http://www.dipter...0000005368 and
http://www.dipter...0000030832) does suggest that
evecta is much more common than
annosa in the UK, so I will put it down as
Helina cf evecta.

It's true that I see lots of
evecta just like this here in Lancashire but I've never found
annosa.
