Good evening,
I saw this fly last week in Heerlen. Is the thickened first part of the
antennae enough reason to call it Haematopota crassicornis ?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
No, this feature in only significant in the female sex.
This looks to me like a male (eyes meeting on another).
Can you confirm that ?

By the way, just noticed that the third antennal segment is orange at base.
In crassicornis, it is completely black.
Therefore, this cannot be crassicornis.
Most likely it is a male of Haematopota pluvialis.

Thanks Theo,
It was a male indeed, my second Haematopota-male in seven years.
I hope this sounds as a good excuse for giving it the wrong name.
