This handsome fly species was caught in the Coltii Chiliei (Diana Meadows), Transylvania, Romania on 13 June 2011. At first I wasn't sure that it wasn't a sawfly but it definitely has just one pair of wings and halteres. I wonder if it is perhaps an Asilid species but would be grateful if someone could provide an identification if posssible from the image. I do have further images and the specimen.

Many tahnks

Alan

Dioctria, I suppose. This thread should better be placed in the Asilidae forum, where the experts are busy!

I would say Dioctria oelandica, i don't think there are other similar species in Europe. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Many thanks to you both. I am hoping that Malcolm Smart will look at this specimen for me.
