Could this be Parasyrphus malinellus or P. proximus? Last one is very unlikely, only one recording from Norway. Or some other species? Not sure of this one.

Photographed in Bodø, northern Norway in mixed forest. Date 28.05.2011.

They look like P. malinellus (mesoscutum quite shining, 3rd antennal segment yellow ventrally, black facial stripe limited to facial tubercle and below), but P. proximus is supposed to look very similar. I don't have any experience with that species. When I compare the pictures with the specimens of P. macularis in my collection (from the Netherlands and Belgium), I notice that the pterostigma in my specimens is yellowish brown, whereas in your specimens it is blackish. I don't know whether this character is of any significance, though. Advise: collect the specimens, so you can study all necessary characters...

I guess that I'll at least have to check sternites to confirm to either species (from my litterature malinellus and proximus can only be seperated on patterning on sternites).

Thanks for answering, then it is one of these not other genera or species (was wondering if P. nigritarsis could be possible, not sure what was the facial stripe until you commentet now... Not very experienced with this type of identifying).
