The arachnids may or may not be parasites. I believe sometimes they are just along for the ride.
At light, Townsville, Queensland.

The typical parasitic water mites I find on Chironomidae are round.

I saw something similar on a crane fly which was identified as Mesostigmata, probably Podicinidae, and definitely not parasitic.

The crane fly is a female in the genus Trentepohlia .
