Thread subject: Diptera.info :: unknown fly.. please help

i snapped this fly the other day in my back garden.
i live in the UK ,england, and have never seen anything like this in our country.

the last thing i saw that looked remotly like this was a large moth in greece, which was collecting nectar from flowers.. in the same way a humming bird would i supose.

at first i thought it was a small bee, then on closer inspection saw it had a large black proboscus/ nose sticking out of the face of it..

any ideas what it is called...

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like Bombylius major - a beefly ... an outside chance of it being the flower-bee Anthophora plumipes.

Check the photo-upload guidelines and re-upload the photo: must not have spaces or unnecessary punctuation in the file name; and must be <190KB in size :)

thanks for the quick reply looks like your spot on with the Bombylius major idea by the look of it... id say thats the fellow .. im working on the pic now.. jpg image image im playing with in photoshop to re size...
