Seems there is a choice of 3
Nowickia ferox, Tachina magnicornis or Tachina fera
N. ferox according to an earlier entry by Chris has black legs so that leaves 2
(First of all looking at the checklist is Phryxe magnicornis the same as Tachina magnicornis, different genus which is surprising)
According to the photos I’ve seen Tachina magnicornis and Tachina fera are very similar, there are several criteria
- the colour of the metatarsus (tarsomere 1) is it black
- the distance between the eyes is also quite large (harder to see in the female)
- the abdominal black band widens towards the end
- occiput grey
I’ll leave it to the experts !

Firstly, you are right - it cannot be
Nowickia because the legs are orange.
Phryxe magnicornis is a different species & genus so not related closely to
Tachina magnicornis.
Tachina magnicornis isn't a British species (yet!) but it's worth looking out for it if you are in the extreme south of England. The specimen doesn't have
Peleteria-bristles so it cannot be that genus either ... so after all that we're left with
Tachina fera ... a very comon summer species ;)
