Unfortunately I got only one chance to photograph this fly, of which at first I thought it might be Phaonia valida, but there seems to be no (well, perhaps a little bit) orange on the antennae.

Photograph taken yesterday at Leerdam, Netherlands.

Could anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance!

I should be writing labels for a butterfly exhibition, but the Phaonia challenge is too powerful!
It's an awkward angle with several key features not clearly visible, but the basal antennal segments look orange enough for valida. The presence of grey dusting will often make them look quite dark from some angles. But I'm not convinced this is valida.
It looks like it is the male of the female you posted in the first two photos of http://www.dipter...post_14052.
Which I thought might be scutellata (which may not be recorded from the Netherlands)! I don't think I can add much more. :(
Back to butterflies!

Thanks very much, Tony. It's a pity the fly would not let me make more photographs from more useful angles.
Good luck with the butterflies!
