It's a beautiful shot, I think the angle and lighting is confusing though. It looks like Merodon equestris of which there are several colour forms. Look at this one on Bugguide which is in a similar stance..

Nope, not Merodon.
Compare it with a male Pterallastes thoracicus in Bugguide.....

Ack! I should be LEARNING from these IDs that people are kind enough to provide.
My memory is good on some things. Sometimes I can look at a fly photo from 20 years ago and remember what park it was taken in. But Pterallastes thoracicus, no, I didn't remember.
