Hello,

13th October, my garden near Lincoln UK. ~5mm

Look at the hind tarsae!

It's nice to see a clear photo of the male hind tarsal "claw". I find plenty of females of this, yet to turn up any males.

Are there any suggestion of the use of the claw. I would guess something to do with mating, but if so, How?

Wow, thanks Ruud! It's a notable species too!

Mark, does the female have dark antennae tips too? I have been seeing a few different little orange flies so might come across it.

It didn't hang around for long so I was lucky to get that clear claw shot!

I don't know anything about sadomachosism in the diptera world, but if there is, the females Aulogastromyia have a strange taste.

Yes, the females have similar antennae. The abdomen of the female is also most peculiar. The 7th sternit and tergit are huge.

That is a good photo of the female, although it wasn't given as a definite ID if that is correct it would have been good for the gallery!

I did get pics of one in the late, even duller hours today which has quite a broad end to it but it didn't have black on the antennae! Post that one later..:D
