Hi,

I have had melanic Melanostoma mellinum, but this is surely Platycheirus. In fact it looks like the one I put on for ID which I had thought to be Platycheirus europaeus but without the spots.

Taken on 22nd August, woodlands and heathlands type habitat, my garden a few miles south of Lincoln UK.

Any takers? :D

It is Platycheirus indeed. And, indeed, the only melanic (not melanistic?; practising my english ;) ) Platycheirus I ever found is one P. europaeus.
The visible characters on your pics all direct to P. europaeus.

I went through the key, and that was my conclusion too but to hear you have only ever come across a melanic P. europaeus had me doing cartwheels! :D:D:D
