Hello!

Is it possible to tell whether these flies belong to one or the other family? The darker one on the first two pics was about 9 mm long, the gray one only 6-7 mm. Pics taken on August-31 in Ostwestfalen/Germany at a hedge. Thanks in advance!

I think Anthomyiidae - the darker one is a male, the paler one a female.

In this case, I would say not, although sometimes the males and females can look quite different.
