Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Chironomidae mouthparts

hi flyforum,

These pictures where sent to me.
Next to the big plumo's of this Chironomidae, it got huge mouthparts? (palps?)

Is it common for Chironomidae?
What is the function of this instrument?
Are these mouthparts typical for this chironomidae species?

Yes, it's the snout of Culicidae what I can see now.

Can males of Culicidae bite me too?
Or only the female?

Only the females bite - males feed on flowers. This looks like the male of Culiseta annulata
