From midwest Sweden 2006-07-10. I think it was rather small, like 5mm ... Is it a Ephydridae sp? Sorry I couldn't get a better view of the abdomen or the legs. Seems rather short legged, and the abdomen is not as long as the wings. TIA!

Edit: Changed subject (Ephydridae sp?)
Edit: Changed subject (Lonchaeidae sp)

Hi Crex

Thanks for your message - yes as Paul states this is a Lonchaeid or lance-fly; distinguished by relatively large head and eyes - this is a female with a wide frons - and broad shiny thoracic witjout many strong setae. This a a species in the genus Lonchaea but I am afraid that it is difficult to say which one from these images. I have a provisional list of Swedish species somewhere if you are interested ..... Iain
