I watched this
Liancalus virens female (see adults forum
http://www.dipter...d_id=28515) feeding at a seepage in a limestone retaining wall. Can anything be said about its prey?

At the same seepage I also found what looks like a pupal skin from which something has emerged:

To me it looks very much like the larva of a Thaumaleidae. This purplish/white pattern at the dorsal side and the entirely white ventral side resembles by specimen of Thaumalea from The Netherlands. I know of no other insect larva from aquatic habitats with this pattern, not even in Chironomidae of which many representatives of the Orthocladiinae are (totally !) purple.

Thank you, Atylotus. This may be the closest I ever come to recognising a member of this family!
