I think it is Tabanus spodopterus spodopterus, south European thermophilous element. Did you collect it? Libor

Hoping posterior two pairs of tibiae are brownish minimaly in the basal half? Not clearly visible in the pics. Do not post the pics, only reply, please. If they have such coloured tibiae, it is T. spodopterus according my knowledge. If you have some free specimens as this (big Tabanus, black antennae), I would appreciate it for my collection. Libor

Yes, it is spodopterus ss.
The dominant larger Tabanus in Hungary, even in the north (at least near Eger, never been near Miskolc)

Dear Libor, femur is really dark, tibiae almost entirely lighter brown. I'll keep in mind to collect for You - I only need one specimen from every species, to be able to compare. I hope I'll find some nice specimens this year.

By the way, I found this female while walking my dog, he was also really intereted in this huge insect :)
