Hi,
I've found this Mydidae in Alicante (South Spain)
Jorge has identified as Leptomydas lusitanicus.
I Think this could be female
I think this could be male
What do you think??
Thanks a lot.
Cheers.

well, this is NOT a Leptomydas. Why? Because the wing venation photo (I don't recall if I *really* saw that photo of venation wing) shows clearly that m1
DOESN'T REACH the costa, but the R1 vein.
This is a Syllegomydas -- not a Hispanomydas because the second flagellomere has an apical wart-like projection!! WOW! This seems to be S. cf. algiricus. It is a pity that you cannot collect it, because I would like to add this fly for Iberian Peninsula. It seems that Torsten has appointed this genus for Spain: "Syllegomydas Becker, 1906: 277
type species: Mydas cinctus (Macquart, 1835) (designation of Sack (1934: 23))
Notobates Hesse, 1969 - subgenus of Syllegomydas
Afrotropical: Chad, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Sudan, Zimbabwe
Palaearctic: Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Libya, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia "
but in 2002, there was not citation for this genus in Tolrá's catalog... ;)
I would like to see the specimens. :)

here
http://www.galeri...mydas2.jpg shows a REAL Leptomydas. We can see clearly that M1 vein reaches the costa and not R1. ;)

Jorge thanks again.
I've found this http://www.insectariumvirtual.com/galeria/Syllegomydas-cf-algericus-img80657.html
and it looks like mine. Do you know where can I find keys for spanish mydidae??
They could be male and female??
Next year I will try to find this mydidae again.
Thanks again.
Cheers.

it is *algiricus*
not algericus. ;)
Syllegomydas algiricus Gerstaecker, 1868
I would need the full description of algiricus. I only have access to some info.

I hope you find the Leptomydas and Hispanomydas... They are present in the Southeast Spain as well.

Hi, I know I am a year too late, but would like to add. This is definitely a
Syllegomydas. Miguel Carles-Tolra published a paper in 2006 in which he recorded this species for the first time from Spain (Almeria, Cabo de Gata, Retamar)
http://www.mydida.../node/8739. If you could collect one this year that would be great. I am currently working on a phylogeny (morphological and molecular) of this family and if you could catch a specimen in 95% ethanol for inclusion in the molecular data-set that would be outstanding. I do have pinned specimens from Tunisia - see
http://www.mydida...e/node/626.
Could I use some of these images for the Mydidae web-site
www.mydidae.tdvia.de? I am certainly acknowledging the photographer.
Thanks, Torsten

Well, I am looking at Vera Richter drawings (Manual of Palearctic Diptera) of Mydidae antennae, and it is very clear that
Hispanomydas hispanicus has a very pyriform second flagellomere
without any wart-like projection, but the photo shows very clearly such projection (specially the last one). (making it a
Syllegomydas; it is very clear and surely 100% that never could be a
Leptomydas) So, or Vera Ricther is wrong (which I highly doubt in this case), or maybe the labels in NHML were changed or the drawings of the antennae were wrongly placed or someone propagated the error before Vera? It is very clear that Vera Richter's key splits out the
Hispanomydas and
Syllegomydas based in the forementioned feature... Thanks for your feeback.
