Nice photo, Chris - it's not just tabanids that have eye bands!
A great way to find this species is to do some gloss painting - if there's any honeysuckle (Lonicera) around, they'll almost certainly turn up and get stuck in the paint. It's the white spirit they find irresistable, presumably reminds them of some volatile given off by Lonciera berries.

Tony, If you want eye bands, you should also have a look at Calliopum. Further, there are a few other small acalyptrate families that can have eye bands.
