Seen today (6.vii.2006) in Berkshire, southern England - about 6mm. Is it a
Miltogramma - and if so which one?

Miltogramma punctatum I'd say. This is a Meigen species (see dipterists (note this is a Glossary ad;)).
M. germari has shifting more asymmetric pattern on the abdominal tergites and more distinct vittae on the thorax.
germari is also rarer but this should never be a guide . Rarity is not a character and I'm ashamed to have mentioned it:(. Robert
