Thread subject: Diptera.info :: "ornithorynque" beetle? a rather strange one! - Anoxia australis

This coleopter is very strange. I have never seen one like this! I saw it in Espinho beach (Sand dunes) on 2nd July 2009. It attacked me at midday... It was violent!
It curious that this beetle remember in some way the ornithorynque... look at the front of that beast. It measures 2,5 cm.
Maybe anyone will recognize this easily. I'M curious about this one.

Open the images in another image editor and save them again. That usually does the trick.
And the general habitus of this specimen (apart from the colours) reminds me of Tenebrionidae.

Very far of Tenebrionidae Paul ;-)
It's Scarabaeiformia > Scarabaeoidea > Melolonthidae > Melolonthinae > Anoxia australis, as Jorge says. It's very similar to Melolontha but much bigger (intermediate size between Melolontha and Polyphylla) and without sharp pygidium.
I only saw Anoxia villosa, many years ago, but never Anoxia australis...

Ah, and the common English name of Ornithorhynchus anatinus, is "Platypus" :)
