Hi

At first I thought this was H. pluvialis... but not so!
Caught in open grassland with cattle nearby on 9 VI 2009.

1. antennal segment without notch or any other irregularity and dusted grey and subcylindrical in shape.
Body length 13 mm.

Because of the antenna (and the size) I would say Haematopota subcylindrica.

Is that a fair assumption or am I missing the obvious?

Regards,
Walther

No one feeling brave enough to grapple with this one?

I identified one recently exactly like this and concluded the same as you.

I don't see many Tabanids where I hunt for flies, therefore it's nice to gain support.
Especially since H. subcylindrica is one of the less common Haematopota sp. in Denmark.
