I would very much appreciate some help with species-level identifications of this genus.
Can you identify this and point out the distinguising characteristics that made, or might have made, identification possible.
On Forget-me-not (Myosotis). Southern England, 26 April.

Probably E interruptus - a view of the face would help to confirm this.

Unfortunately the only other shot I have of this is of the tail end! :(
Can you say why you think it might be E. interruptus?

wing without dark band and the stigma is small and quadrilateral (also check the black stripe over the face). in most literature you will find this species to be called Eristalis nemorum.

The black stripe is quite small, otherwise you would see more of it from this angle. Another characteristic for
E. nemorum =
interrupta ;)

Eristalis (1) is the same species.
