This is a small fly - smaller than 5mm. It is from my garden in South Africa. Can somebody please help with an ID?

Tephritidae, some Didacus sp.?
If you change the title to Tephritidae, it will attrackt the real experts on this family.

I'd suggest Lauxaniidae...

Thank you Paul. I had a look at the gallery and it looks very similar to the Lauxaniidae Pachycerina seticornis.

Hi,
yes, it is very simillar to P. seticornis, so it is probably some Lauxanid, unfortunatelly i know only European fauna.

The resemblence with Pachycerina is why I suggested Lauxaniidae. :)

This is not only similar to Pachycerina, it IS in the genus Pachycerina! A very very nice photo!! I hope you have the specimen or specimens! In any case, it is not any of the Pachycerina described from the Afrotropics - the most similar appears to be P. vaga Adams from "Rhodesia" (=Zambia, Malawi or Zimbabwe) and Tanzania, but it disagrees with several characteristics of that species. The other species are from the Seychelles and Mauritius. Non-Afrotropical species are described from Europe (of course - P. seticornis and P. pulchra) as well as India and Southeast Asia. Very likely an undescribed species. :D
