This moth was photographed at Scatsta Airport on 20/12/07. It looks a bit different to a recent post of a Winter Moth..anyone care to hazard a guess as to its name?

Hi Roger, I see this has no replies so I thought I'd stick my oar in. I think this has to be Winter Moth Operophtera brumata male; the only other possible is Northern WM O.fagata and that has a white hind wing.

Cheers

Tim

Thanks for the welcome oar Tim...You get used to no replies after a while, not that I've had many :). Thanks to one and all @ Diptera.info (How many Brownie Points is that worth)
I had one of these ID'd a couple of weeks earlier than this one was posted...It is on Page 21 of my posts. That one was much lighter than this version.
Regards Roger

No problem. In an idle moment I was looking through old posts and saw yours, unanswered. I'm a complete beginner at most things Dipteran but I have caught and identified a few moths in my time (no expert though), plus I do have a few books. I did see your other W Moth - like a lot I guess they are variable, but as I said there isn't a lot else to consider at that time of year.

I've got a lot out of the forum since I joined so I'm delighted if I can contribute even in a small way.

all the best

Tim

Thanks Tim
Moths I now send off to Ian Kimber at UK Moths...usually get a reply in a few days. He hasn't got fed-up with the amount I've sent him....so far.
I've learned a bit since joining D.info (though some here might wonder :P).
