This fly was sunning on a rock on scrubby heathland in Leicestershire. It has an interesting pattern on its thorax. Any ideas? Thanks

Maybe a very worn Haematobosca stimulans?

I think Crex is right, Haematobosca stimulans. Any lateral shot ?

Unfortunately I didn't get a lateral shot, but many thanks anyway. I've checked the gallery and the H. stimulans image looks quite different - much paler. Perhaps this species is quite variable?

Like Crex said, it must be a worn specimen which lost most of its grey dusting.

I agree - my first impression was Haematobosca stimulans.
