I don't have much experience at Diptera, but I thought I'd be able to get what I presume to be a Xylotini species. Taken this week on the North Kent Coast in England, near ditches and saltmarsh, it is small Xylota size, probably about 10mm or less.

Many thanks. I thought it was too chunky for Syritta pipiens and the pale patches at the base of the wings put me off too. This species is so ubiquitous it is not even illustrated in my 'Hoverflies of Surrey' book. How ignorant I am not to know it ! Thanks. M.
