Hi,
Two days ago I watched a nice Syrphid ovipositing in the ground. I am quite convinced that it is a Merodon avidus. The species is known from our Berlin district, so it is no surprise. Some weeks ago I photographed a male, too.
By the way, the yellow "balls" are seeds of Veronica hederifolia.
