Thread subject: Diptera.info :: fly? with long antennae -> Ceratopogonidae

Hello,

I found this two weeks ago near a lake in western germany. It looks like a brachycera to me, but with such long antennae?

What is it?

I always thought, Simuliidae are very small (<= 3mm). As far as I can remember, this one was a bit more than 1cm. Simuliidae nevertheless?

Wow ... a >1cm simulid?! :O That would give a hell of a bite :(

It does look a bit like a simuliid, but actually the legs, wing venation and antennae are all wrong. It's a female ceratopogonid, subfamily Ceratopogoninae and tribe Sphaeromiini judging from the wing venation. I don't think I can take it further without a specimen. :)
