Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Which family

At first I thought this to be a Syrphid, nut now I see it on photo I doubt that. I think I see a calypter, and the wing venation - as far as visible - seems not Syrphid-like. What family could this belong to?

Turkey, 30 May, ca 1000 m high, mid south. Wooded mountains.

Looks like Merodon, possibly clavipes or aberrans, but I'm not familiar with these species

Cor - try changing the title to "Which Merodon?" to attract the syrphid experts. They should be able to help decide which species.

Unfortunately this is not such an easy task! :(
In Turkey there are 50 or so species of merodon, of which a lot are poorly known.
I know my Syrphs, but for this one I'd say female Merodon sp. :D
Btw, not clavipes, it's bigger and more robust with very thick hind femura!
Greetings
