There were lots of these flies feeding on umbellifers today. They are about 15mm. Any ID help would be appreciated. Thanks

Empis tessellata (Empididae).
15 mm. seems to me slightly too large.

Thank you. I had thought that Empis was just a predator but I now know it also feeds on nectar. I think my estimate of size was mistaken. Thanks again.

That is well observed.
Empis is one of the few groups that are predatory and are very fond of flowers. You won't find an Asilid on flowers, other than by accident.

Much and most of the Empis only hunt for getting prey to be used in courtship behaviour...
