13 May 2008, NB, Canada.
Strange white setae on back of head; remind me of teeth:D

Dear Tony, it is a Tephritis. Most Tephritinae (almost 40% of the family) have such a white setae. The pic is incredible!

Thanks; pity that they are not not larger; cannot appreciate their beauty with the naked eye.

It is a male of Tephritis angustipennis Lw. w/ slightly aberrant wing pattern, the only truly Holarctic species of tephritids; it is associated with Achillea ptarmica and other related species in N. Europe (incl. N Switzerland), Siberia, Canada & N USA.

Many thanks, I didn't expect an ID to species; but certainly pleased to get one.
We have A. ptarmica and A. millefolium in NB.
