This tabanid found me today (25/04/2008) in Barcelos, Portugal. I think it belongs to the species Haematopota pluvialis, is that correct? And, if so, what characteristics are important to ID it?

I doubt it. The antenna seems completely black and the species is altogether quite dark.
More like some species in the ocelligera-subgroup.
