I found this species in the vegetation of a patch of wasteland between vineyards in Languedoc. My initial thought was Dysmachus trigonus, but the red base of the tibiae doesn't fit. Another suggestion from a contact on the Insect.org forum was Dysmachus hiulcus, a species about which I can find no information.

On Dysmachus trigonus I've read in Wolff, Gebel, Geller-Grimm (2018): Die Raubfliegen Deutschlands i(n German):
"Legs are completely black, mostly at base of tibia narrowly reddish..."

Thank you very much for your reply and for this clarification regarding *Dysmachus trigonus*.
